Four our last Books, Films and Friends book club get-together of the year, we’re screening The Secret Life of Bees, a film based on the remarkable novel by Sue Monk Kiddabout divine female power. Set in South Carolina in 1964, this is the tale of 14-year-old Lily Owens who is haunted by the memory of her late mother. To escape her lonely life and troubled relationship with her father T-Ray, Lily flees with Rosaleen, her caregiver and friend, to a South Carolina town that holds the secret to her mother's past. Taken in by the intelligent and independent Boatwright sisters, Lily finds solace in their mesmerizing world of beekeeping. Moderator to be announced. The State Café will be open for espresso drinks, wine and beer, cocktails, light food and desserts. Our moderator will be Brian Glesser, a wild bee hunter and rescuer who, along with his wife, is the proprietor of Harmony Honey in Modesto. They provide bees to local farmers and hobbyists and will sell Hamony Honey at the July 10 meeting of Books, Films & Friends.
